The ocean of apparent “must haves” – useful gift ideas for a baby
It is an undeniable fact that there is a vast array of new parent must buys out there. There is something for absolutely everything you can think of. As new parents we are either spoilt for choice or thrown into a sea of confusion when it comes to what a baby actually needs. It can be likened to being in a room with a thousand voices each screaming “buy me”. Smart marketing ploys by companies will have you thinking your baby cannot do without what they are trying to push on you but I have come to learn that probably about 20% of what’s available are actually essential…and that is me being generous.
In light of this fresh revelation and rude awakening, I want to share 5 USEFUL baby products that were essential for me and can be great stocking fillers if you have family/friends with a new born this Christmas:
I had heard amazing things about Water Wipes during my pregnancy and so stocked up on a few boxes. To be honest I didn’t try any other type of wipes for my new born so I can only testify of how well these work on my little one. They feel and smell very mild, made up of 99.9% water and a drop of fruit extract which helps to avoid the dreaded nappy rash situation. They do not come cheap however they are definitely worth it.
Some kind of bouncer which detaches from its base is a definite must in my eyes. I used the Joie Serina 2 in 1 Swing/Rocker/Bouncer Chair and I cannot stress how many times this bouncer enabled me to have a peaceful shower that lasted more than 4 minutes because I could take my little one along with me where he would happily relax. As a new born my son loved the rocking motion and soft sleep lullabies of this bouncer and would always spend his naps in it. My health visitor (Hi, if you are reading this) will be having kittens right now as they do not advise using any items that prevents a baby from lying flat on their backs due to the potential risk of asphyxiation. If your baby is similar to mine and totally detests lying flat on their backs then a bouncer is without a doubt your friend. Just don’t keep them in there for prolonged periods of time
The more appropriate name for this item should be multi-purpose pillow. Relatively inexpensive but I used it for everything; as a nursing pillow, as a pillow pillow, as a guard to prevent my child from tipping over from sitting position, as a neck pillow for myself (guilty), for assisted tummy time..I’m sure there are many other uses I’ve missed out but you get the picture. I would certainly include this on any baby shower gift list.
Did anyone warn you that your new born would be doing the number 2 approximately every 3 hours for the first few months of their lives? Mine certainly lived up to this and the Tommee Tippee Sangenic Tec Nappy Disposal tub came in very handy. Especially when he upgraded to eating solids and I entered the phase of non-baby poos. This item nicely stores away up to 28 soiled nappies without any suspicious odours escaping. It also has an antibacterial film kills 99 per cent of germs on contact. Replacing the filters does not come cheap but again, I think it is totally worth it.
I have to admit I was none the wiser about this existence of such an item, and quite frankly why would I? It is essentially a short version of a high chair and can be used for both playtime and feeding time. I found the Mamas & Papas Baby Snug Seat and Activity tray particularly handy; my little one couldn’t get enough of it. Granted he always tried to chew the play station and would slobber all over it 247 but he loved it. It encourages upright sitting and the soft textured seat provides great comfort. The useful thing about the mamas and papas bumbo seat is that the inner seating pad is removable for when your little one begins to outgrow it. Did I mention that I also used this as a feeding table? If your baby is not quite ready for a high chair, this is your best bet.
Needless to say a baby needs more than the above and every baby is different but opinions are like noses, we all have one.
